Mute\u00a0and Spoon are pleased to announce the release of\u00a0VILLA WUNDERBAR<\/strong>, on\u00a04 November 2013<\/strong>, a 2CD set, compiling the work of Can founder\u00a0Irmin\u00a0Schmidt\u2019s<\/strong> solo and soundtrack work, including two unreleased Can remixes and a collection of soundtrack pieces personally compiled by long-term collaborator Wim Wenders<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

CD1\u00a0is a compilation of Irmin Schmidt\u2019s extensive work as a solo artist over the\u00a0past 30 years, whilst CD2 –\u00a0selected and presented by the filmmaker Wim Wenders<\/strong>\u00a0– is an insight into Schmidt’s vast work as a composer\u00a0for film and television for which Wenders has written extensive sleeve notes.<\/p>\n

The two CD compilation includes tracks such as Villa Wunderbar<\/strong>, Kick On The Floods<\/strong> and Bohemian Step<\/strong>, alongside unreleased remixes by Schmidt of two\u00a0Can tracks,\u00a0Alice<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Last Night Sleep<\/strong> and an unreleased extract from La\u00a0Fermosa, a ballet by Youri V\u00e0mos, entitled B\u00eates De Passage<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

After an extensive classical education as pianist, conductor and composer,\u00a0Irmin Schmidt \u2013 who studied under\u00a0Stockhausen and Ligeti – established\u00a0Can in the late 60s combining classic new music with rock and jazz. The\u00a0band\u2019s\u00a0powerful influence has never diminished, and their indelible mark is apparent\u00a0in the bands who freely\u00a0acknowledge their importance – from\u00a0Portishead, James Murphy, New Order, Factory Floor, Public Image Ltd, Mogwai, Kanye West\u00a0(who sampled \u2018Sing Swan Song\u2019)\u00a0and Radiohead – as well as across other disciplines such as visual art and literature.<\/p>\n

After Can disbanded in the late 70s,\u00a0Irmin Schmidt returned to his work as a solo artist\u00a0and the result is a vast\u00a0oeuvre, which includes a series of solo albums (Toy\u00a0Planet (1981), Musk At Dusk (1987), Impossible Holidays (1991)),\u00a0an opera (Gormenghast (2000) based on the\u00a0Mervyn Peak trilogy), several releases with English composer Kumo\u00a0(Masters\u00a0Of Confusion (2001), Axolotl Eyes (2008), Flies, Guys & Choirs (2008) and Cyclopean EP (2013)), a ballet\u00a0(La\u00a0Fermosa by Youri V\u00e0mos) and over 100 film scores (Snowland, 2005 dir Hans W. Geissend\u00f6rfer, Palermo Shooting, 2008, dir Wim Wenders), amongst\u00a0others)<\/p>\n

Schmidt’s sound-trips combine what normally competes and conflicts:\u00a0rock, pop, jazz, classic, electronic,\u00a0ambient, drum ‘n\u2019 bass, waltz, eastern …\u00a0He is a musical alchemist.<\/p>\n

Following on from the phenomenal success of Can box set, The Lost Tapes<\/strong>,\u00a0curated by Irmin Schmidt, Jono Podmore and Mute\u2019s Daniel Miller, and this year\u2019s Cyclopean EP<\/strong> (Schmidt, Kumo, Burnt\u00a0Friedman and Can drummer Jaki Liebezeit), 2 December\u00a02013 will see the long-awaited release of the Can back\u00a0catalogue, remastered on vinyl for the very first time.\u00a0All 14 albums, including Out Of\u00a0Reach and an exclusive live bonus album, will be released\u00a0on 180g vinyl in a box\u00a0set alongside original posters and artwork.<\/p>\n
